The SMU Athletic Department jump-started the 2005 football season Wednesday with its inaugural Football Kickoff Luncheon.

Head Coach Phil Bennett believes that SMU has a great opportunity this season to put the football program back where it needs to be.

“I like their character, their determination and their passion for football. These guys have it,” said Bennett.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach served as the luncheon’s keynote speaker.

Staubach addressed a crowd of over 400 people about the importance of teamwork and perseverance.

“Life is like the HOV lane because you’ve got to take someone with you. You can’t do it by yourself,” said Staubach.

Staubach discussed the “it” feeling that players must find within themselves in order to win and be great.

The “it” feeling he discussed is a mental aspect of winning together as well as playing together. It is a feeling of confidence.

He described his experience in 1963 about his team at the United States Naval Academy and finding the “it” feeling after a rough year in 1962.

That year his team had the perfect balance between teamwork and trust. They took more chances and didn’t worry about making mistakes.

“Staubach was very inspiring. He inspired us to get out there and work harder. We’re ready and we have high expectations for the season,” said sophomore running back Fred Turner.

The Mustangs get their 2005 season underway Sept. 3 when they host Baylor. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
