Foo Fighters, In Your Honor

I have always considered myself a recreational Foo Fighters fan. In stating this, I mean that I have never been a hardcore listener. I cannot even tell you the name of their first albums, but I can say that if one of their songs came on the radio, I would definitely not change the station.

Over the years the Foo Fighters have provided me with some valid reasons to keep from hitting my other preset buttons: “The One,” “Learn to Fly” and “Times Like These” to name a few. Their latest two-disc album, “In Your Honor,” stands up to this tradition and does not disappoint.

With its catchy hooks and strong beats, the first single from “In Your Honor,” “The Best of You,” is already topping the American and European charts.

If you like this song, as you should if you generally like things that are good, then I feel I should warn you that besides the other two songs that sound almost exactly the same, the rest of the 19-song album is nothing like “The Best of You.”

Disc one, which holds “The Best of You” and its clones “No Way Back” and “In Your Honor,” seems to have an overall angry tone to it. With lyrics such as “I’ll be right there . . . The whole electric chair . . . see you in hell” (from “Hell”) and vocal performances that could rightfully be called screaming, not singing, disc one is a bit too heavy for me.

In direct contrast, disc two sounds more like Enya than it does heavy metal. With light sounds and soft beats, it reminds me of the easy-listening jazz station that my parents played in the car when I was growing up.

Overall, the majority of this CD is not worth listening to unless you are a hardcore Foo Fighters fan. But if you are just a recreational listen like me, save almost $23 and just download “The Best of You,” “No Way Back” and “In Your Honor” for 99 cents each on iTunes.
