Men’s soccer drops pair

The SMU men’s soccer team dropped both games over the weekend during exhibition play at the Westfield Cup in Akron, Ohio.

SMU lost 2-0 to Arkon Friday evening in day one of exhibition play. This left SMU to face the University of Connecticut on Sunday afternoon in the cup’s consolation game.

Upperclassmen led the team Sunday afternoon but SMU still posted a 4-3 loss to UCONN in the consolation game.

UCONN scored first only 18 seconds into the game. However, at the 16:00 mark SMU junior Jay Needham tied the game, 1-1, off an assist by senior Duke Hashimoto.

Late in the first half, UCONN’s Brian White scored off a corner kick, which left SMU down 2-1 at intermission.

SMU junior Mynor Gonzalez knotted the game, 2-2, in the second half off of a penalty kick.

UCONN scored the game’s next two goals in a span of only six minutes. Needham scored his second goal at the 85-minute mark off a long free kick.

The men open the 2005 season with Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 2 in Bloomington, Ind., as part of the Adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
