The beginning of classes yesterday marked the end of Week of Welcome, a series of events sponsored by the office of New Student Programs.
According to the NSP Web site, the week “is designed to help incoming students meet other new Mustangs,” through a variety of social mixer activities.
The WOW schedule began on Sunday with an Opening Day Family Picnic for students and parents, which ended early because of inclement weather.
Later that evening new students were invited to a Spirit Step Show and Greek Open House.
On Monday new students could have lunch with their WOW group, a random selection of students, and they also attended a mandatory Residence Hall Meeting.
Monday’s events also included a speech by Dean Jasper Neel, a discussion of Barbara Ehrenreich’s “Nickel and Dimed,” the 2009 class picture, a religious life barbecue and casino night.
The seven activities on Tuesday were highlighted by a Road Trip to the Angelika and a show by Magician Nate Staniforth.
Incoming freshmen were able to officially call themselves Mustangs on Wednesday with the Rotunda Passage and Convocation. Students also attended an involvement fair and pizza tasting contest and a mandatory all-hall session on how to live harmoniously with a roommate.
“The Week of Welcome events made me feel at ease,” incoming student Ashley Bruckbauer said. “I met a lot of new people and I feel like I can call SMU my home now.”
