State health services searches for rabid puppy owners

Texas Department of State Health Services and the Weatherford Police Department are searching for the original owners of a rabied puppy that was dropped off at the Weatherford Parker County Animal Shelter in Weatherford, Texas between Oct. 21-26.

The rabied puppy caused 90 dogs at the shelter to be euthanized due to the high risk.

The original rabid puppy was humanely euthanized when it was discovered to have rabies. Texas Department of State Health Services said the puppy was infected with rabies before it arrived at the shelter and showed no signs of the disease until after it was adopted.

The shelter shut down Saturday and asked everyone who adopted or picked up their pets between Oct. 21 and Nov. 4 to return them for a 10-day quarantine period.

The observation period is expected to end by Nov. 21, and some dogs will be returned to their owners. The shelter hopes to reopen shortly thereafter.

The rabied puppy was an 8-10 week old, mix-breed male, with short black hair and light-colored markings on his front legs.
