Student Code of Conduct proposed changes presented to Senate

Student Body Secretary Erika Briceno presented seven proposed changes to the Student Code of Conduct (SCoC) submitted by members of the SMU community.

Complaints against the proposals can be filed to Briceno until next Friday.

The first proposed change is for section 3.04(f), which states, “The chalking of sidewalks for advertising by recognized organizations or University departments is permitted as long as prior approval is granted by the Student Activities & Multicultural Student Affairs Office.”

The proposal would delete this from the SCoC because SMU President Turner has not allowed the chalking of sidewalks in recent years and has said he never will.

The change received a positive recommendation from the committee with a vote of 6-0-0 (for-against-abstain).

The second proposed change concerns section 4.04(m).

The third and fourth proposed changes involve section 3.27, which states, “All areas in University buildings, including residence halls and greek houses are smoke-free.”
