2008 season finale Saturday

The Mustangs will take the field for the final time in 2008 on Saturday against Southern Miss.

SMU has a 1-10 record going into the last game of the season same as they did last year. The Mustangs’ finale in 2007 was a triple-overtime loss in Memphis.

Last season was the first time the Mustangs had faced the Golden Eagles. In Hattiesburg, Miss. Southern Miss got an early lead and never let SMU in the game. The Golden Eagles put up 28 straight points, with SMU’s lone touchdown coming with 6:46 remaining in the game.

SMU split time between quarterbacks Bo Levi Mitchell and Logan Turner in the last game at UTEP. Mitchell started the game, but came out at halftime still sore from an injury suffered Nov. 8 against Memphis.

After a five-game losing streak in the middle of their season the Golden Eagles have won three straight games including a 70-14 win against UAB.

Southern Miss is led by junior running back Damion Fletcher who has 1,586 yards on the season averaging 5.4 yards a carry and 15 touchdowns. Four other Golden Eagles have multiple rushing touchdowns.

Running back Tory Harrison has five, quarterback Jeremy Young has four, wide receiver Chris Johnson has two and running back Marcus Rains has three for a combined 30 rushing touchdowns with another added by backup quarterback Stephen Reeves.

The Mustangs have given up 22 rushing touchdowns this season. SMU ranks 117th of 119 teams in rushing defense while Southern Miss ranks 21st in rushing offense in the country averaging 201 rushing yards a game.

Saturday’s game will be the last chance for the Mustangs to improve on their 1-11 record from last season.
