The No. 2 SMU men’s soccer team (10-2-2, 5-0-1) will take on the Memphis Tigers in another C-USA showdown. Memphis is 8-2-4 on the year, but only 2-0-3 in the conference.
With their win over South Carolina on Wednesday night, the Mustangs now have a commanding lead in the Conference USA standings. The Mustangs have a five-point lead over Tulsa, who they tied earlier in the year.
On the year, the Tigers have taken care of business against weaker teams but struggled against ranked teams. They have not beaten a ranked team this year.
Senior forward Jared Britcher leads the Tigers’ offensive attack with his experience and goal-scoring ability. The two-year letterman is tied for the team lead in goals with five and leads the team in points with 15 points.
Complementing Britcher is senior midfielder Kevin Walsh. The pace of the Tigers’ offense thrives off Walsh and Brichter, who account for most of Memphis’ offense. Walsh also has five goals on the season.
The Mustangs are coming off an important win over South Carolina. Coming out of Charleston with a win extended the Mustangs’ winning streak to six and their unbeaten streak to nine.
Junior forward Richard Oliva leads the Mustangs in goals scored this year with seven. Oliva typically comes off the bench, but makes every one of his minutes count by energizing the Mustangs offense. Oliva brings added size to the front line, which provides a change of pace from both Scott Geppert and Dane Saintus.
The Mustangs’ midfield has given opposing teams trouble because they play from box to box on both sides of the ball. Bruno Guarda leads the Mustangs in points with 18 and trails Oliva by only one goal for the team lead.
The game will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.
