The SMU volleyball team posted a 3-0 (30-18, 30-26, 30-28) victory Wednesday evening against North Texas in the home schedule opener.

Senior middle blocker Kelly Larkan led the Mustangs with 11 kills and hit .321. Sophomore setter Madison Hill posted a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs.

Sophomore Rachel Guibilato added 15 digs, seven kills, four aces and three blocks to the Mustang victory. Junior Jennette Evanco recorded 21 digs in the 3 matches, the fifth best record in SMU history.

The Mustangs controlled the first game from the beginning and won 30-18. In game two senior Ashley Zener entered the Mustang lineup. SMU fought a back-and-forth battle with the Mean Green throughout the game but won 30-26.

The Mustangs struggled from the beginning of the third match and remained behind a majority of the time. After a tough fight, SMU pulled through and won the third game 30-28.

“A block, a dump, a kill and an ace and we’re done,” said Zener.

The volleyball team hosts the SMU Invitational Sept. 2-3. The Mustangs will take on Stony Brook at 1:30 p.m. and Oral Roberts at 7:30 p.m. in Moody Coliseum on Sept. 3. The Mustangs play again on the Sept. 4 against Texas Tech at 3:30 p.m.
