The SMU men’s soccer team dropped both games this weekend at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington, Ind.
The team posted their first season-opening loss in five years to No. 16 Notre Dame Friday afternoon by a score of 4-1.
Notre Dame got on the scoreboard less then two minutes into the game after Greg Dalby netted his fist collegiate goal off a forty-yard free kick. Notre Dame’s Nate Norman increased their lead to 2-0 after an unassisted goal at the 15th minute.
Junior Jay Needham scored SMU’s lone goal at the 36:17 minute mark.
SMU put pressure on the Notre Dame defense in the second half and held the score at 2-1 until late into the half. However, Notre Dame netted two goals within a minute of each other at the 79:13 mark and at the 80:00 mark, giving the Fighting Irish a three-goal advantage.
SMU attempted to redeem itself Saturday afternoon but posted a 4-0 loss to defending national champion and tournament host Indiana.
Indiana shut out SMU and scored three goals in the first 21 minutes of the game. The Hoosiers added a fourth goal at the 69:00 mark.
SMU senior midfielder David Chun and freshmen midfielder Jeff Harwell represented the Mustangs on the Classic’s All-Tournament team.
The Mustangs host the SMU Radisson Hotel Classic this weekend at Westcott Field. On Friday SMU takes on West Virginia at 7:30 p.m. SMU plays against South Florida Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
