After falling flat in a loss to UNT on Sept. 4, the SMU women’s soccer team scored an encouraging 1-0 win over St. Mary’s, and then suffered a demoralizing 5-0 loss to No. 10 Cal at the St. Mary’s College Tournament in Moraga, Calif., last weekend.
The Mustangs (4-3) started the weekend well, playing a tough St. Mary’s (4-2) team to a tie through regulation, after being out-shot 8-2 in the first half.
Kimber Bailey scored her fifth goal in three games, almost ten minutes into overtime after a Greta Carter pass put her one-on-one with Gaels’ goalkeeper Andrea Lee.
Also encouraging was the return of forward Olivia O’Rear, who had been out for several weeks with an ankle injury. O’Rear had one shot after coming in as a substitute and started against Cal.
Sunday’s game, however, was a bit rougher on the Mustangs. Cal (5-0-1) scored in the sixth minute off the foot of Liz Eisenberg and never looked back.
Substitue Lindsay Clute scored to make it 2-0 at the 33:50 mark, and Alivia Mazura chipped SMU freshman goalkeeper Ashley Gunter from 25-yard out ten seconds later to make it 3-0.
Eisenberg and Clute each added a goal in the second half. Cal out-shot the Mustangs 19-2 and out-fouled SMU 15-5.
SMU returns to Westcott Field this Thursday evening, when they take on the Baylor Bears at 7 p.m.
Admission is free with an SMU ID.
