Mr. University to be crowned tonight

Pi Beta Phi will host their third annual “Mr. University” show tomorrow from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. “Mr. University” is a male pageant with different guys representing various organizations on campus such as fraternities, sororities and sports teams.

Contestants are judged on sportswear, talent, formal wear, question and answer and their talent. Some of the talents the contestants will be performing are bagpipes, ribbon dancing, fiddle playing and rapping.

Judges for the show are popular SMU professors who were chosen in a vote by their peers. The professors on the judging panel are Angie Nozaleda, David Hadeler, Adrian Tan, Albert Popoovic, Birdie Barr and Bill Ford.

The winner of the pageant will receive sideline passes to a Dallas Cowboys game, along with the title of Mr. University.

After the event, Pi Phi will also be hosting an after-party in the lobby of the Hughes-Trigg Theater with food and music from the Dallas band ODIS.

After purchasing a ticket for the event, people have the opportunity to donate money in the name of their favorite campus organization or contestant. All funds gathered from ticket sales will benefit Heroes for Children and Texas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital.

Heroes for Children is a non-profit organization that provides financial and social assistance to Texas families who have children battling cancer, and who have spent more than $750,000.

Ashlee Rivalto, the Vice-President of the Pi Phi Philanthropy committee, said her sorority chose Texas Scottish Rite as the other beneficiary from Mr. University since “Pi Phi’s national philanthropy is literacy” and they recognized Scottish Rite’s “outstanding work in dyslexia education and research” at the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia.

To see whom the contestants are and to find out who will win, people can attend Mr. University in the lower level of Hughes Trigg on Thursday night. Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 if purchased in advance.
