SMU alumni journeyed back to campus last weekend for the annual Homecoming celebration.
Events took place throughout the week before the Homecoming football game, where SMU lost to Memphis 31-26. These events included the Pigskin Revue, Community Service day, Field Day and Live from the Hilltop.
Beta Upsilon Chi and Gamma Phi Beta took first place in the overall Spirit Competition.
Delta Gamma took first place in the Homecoming float contest with their “Ghostbusters” theme.
Delta Delta Delta and Lamda Chi Alpha took second place for their “Jaws”-themed float.
Pi Kappa Alpha and Kappa Alpha Theta’s Harry Potter themed float tied with Program Council’s “A Night at the Movies” float, for third.
Lamda Chi Alpha representative Regan Owen took the title of Homecoming King, with Sigma Alpha Epsilon representative Andrew Robinson named first runner-up and Lamar Dowling of the Union/Mustang 11 named second runner-up.
Gamma Phi Beta representative Allison Albert was crowned as Homecoming Queen. Kappa Alpha Theta representative Savannah Engel took the first runner-up place, and Chi Omega representative Rachael Russel took second runner-up.
There was a total of 21 candidates for the Homecoming court. The King and Queen took home various gift cards to NorthPark mall. The first runners-up won flowers and a gift certificate to Bandito’s restaurant. The second runners-up received flowers and a gift certificate to J.Crew.
The King and Queen were selected based on the student election (25 percent), GPA and resume (25 percent), the interview (25 percent) and spirit points/team placement (25 percent).
SMU names 2008 Distinguished Alumni
Darrell Lafitte (’54): Lafitte serves on the board of Compas Bank Dallas and the SMU Athletic Forum. He previously served as the chair of that bank from 1993 to 1998. He has also served as the Chief Executive Officer for the North Dallas Bank and Trust Company, as well as Cornerstone Bank.
Lafitte has served on the Board of Trustees of the Highland Park Independent School District. He has chaired the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Dallas, Baylor University Medical Center Foundation and the Easter Seal Society of Dallas.
Lafitte has also been awarded the SMU Letterman’s Silver Mustang Award and the Cox School of Business Distinguished Alumni Award.
Malcolm S. Morris (’68): Morris is a board member of Living Water International, previously serving as chair. He also founded and chairs the Millennium Water Alliance.
Morris is also chair and co-CEO of Stewart Information Services Corporation. He is the CEO and chair of Stewart Title Guaranty Company.
Gary E. Pittman (’53): Pittman is the co-inventor the of light emitting diode (LED). Pittman and a colleague invented the LED while he was working at Texas Instruments.
Pittman has also served as the vice president for manufacturing at Spectronics, Inc., the president of SPC, Inc. and the director of military business at Honeywell Optoelectronics.
Pittman is the recipient of the Lazenby Outstanding Alumnus Award from the SMU Chemistry Department.
Richard Ware (’68): Ware is the president of Amarillo National Bank. He was a member of the University’s Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1992 and 1994 to 2008. He has served as the Board’s vice chair.
He has also served as the chair of the Amarillo Area Foundation, Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, Harrington Foundation, the Texas Business Hall of Fame and the National Board of Big Brothers of America.
Ware was named the Outstanding Trustee of the Year in 1987, 1995 and 1998.
Richie L. Butler (’93): Butler was awarded the 2008 Emerging Leader award. He is the senior vice president and governance committee member for CityView. He helped to create Unity Estates, a planned community of 285 single-family homes.
Butler also founded the church community Union Cathedral and serves as the senior pastor.
