SMU’s Academy awards announced

The 2003 Distinguished Teaching Professor Awards have been announced by the Provost’s office and four new members of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers join the eight current members. The new honorees represent Dedman College, Meadows School of the Arts and Perkins School of Theology. They are: Wayne Woodward, statistical sciences; Rita Whillock, corporate communications & public affairs; Annemarie Weyl Carr, art history; and William Abraham, theology.

Provost Ross Murfin made the choices from a list of finalists submitted by the Center for Teaching Excellence that administered the award process. “As always, the choice was a difficult one in which all of the candidates have superb records in teaching and working with students,” Murfin said.

The awards and the Academy were established in 2001 through a gift from Ruth Altschuler, then Chair of SMU’s Board of Trustees. The award includes a $10,000 stipend.

Members serve an active period of two years, during which time they share experiences and expertise in teaching with the academic community through Forums, normally held three times each semester, and other events. The teaching philosophies of the four new members may be found on the Center for Teaching Excellence Web page at http://www.smu.edu/cte/.
