Women’s soccer returns home

The SMU women’s soccer team has been riding a hot streak for the last nine games. This weekend the Mustangs will look to extend that to 11.

This will be the first home game for the women’s soccer team since Oct. 1.

On Friday night the Mustangs take on Marshall. The Thundering Herd come into the match-up with a 5-7-1 record and 1-4 in C-USA. The Herd are coming off a 4-0 loss to UCF giving up two goals in each half.

Marshall is led by Kassie Hollman who leads the team in goals with eight and points with 19. The Herd defense is strong in the first half but slows as the game continues. Marshall outscores their opponents 15 to eight in the opening half, but are outscored 21 to 10 in the final half.

On Sunday afternoon the Mustangs will face East Carolina University. The Pirates post a better record than Marshall with a 7-6-2 record and are 2-2-1 in C-USA. Amy Szilard leads the Pirates with six goals and thirteen points, while Sarah Kirkley has eight assists on the year.

ECU is coming off a 2-0 win over Southern Mississippi at home. But the Pirates haven’t put together a winning streak in the conference this year.

The Mustangs defeated both Marshall and ECU last season with shutout wins of 4-0 and 2-0. Those games were played on the road and this season the Mustangs will host them in Dallas.

The Mustangs continue to be led by Olivia O’Rear who has scored 11 goals in 15 games played. Krystal Bailey continues to led SMU with four assists on the year.

Ashley Gunter continues to be solid in goal only allowing 12 goals in 15 games, and posting seven shutouts. At this point in the season O’Rear has almost scored as many goals as the Mustangs’ opponents.

The games will take place on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Westcott Field.
