Women’s soccer wins eighth game in a row

The Mustang women’s soccer team won its seventh and eighth games in a row this weekend, and improved on an undefeated conference record.

SMU opened the road trip against Houston on Friday night. The Mustangs came out with a 1-0 victory over the Cougars. Goalkeeper Ashley Gunter recorded her seventh shutout of the season and only needed to make one save to do it.

It was the ninth shutout of the year for the Mustangs, and the game was won in the first half with a goal from team leader Olivia O’Rear in the 33rd minute of the game. O’Rear shot the ball from the right side with assists from Krystal Bailey and Carley Phillips. It was O’Rear’s 10th goal on the season, and her fourth game winner. It was Bailey’s fourth assist on the season and Phillip’s second.

On Sunday, the Mustang offense opened up. SMU recorded two first half goals, O’Rear’s 11th and Kimber Bailey’s fifth. The goals came just three minutes apart 30 minutes into the match. And after Rice opened up the second half with a goal, the Mustangs fired back with three more. Kimber Bailey’s second of the game and sixth of the season, Kim Peabody’s third of the year and Kristen Moran’s first goal of the season. Assists came from Kimber Bailey, Caitlin Carter, O’Rear and Jenna Lind.

Gunter was unable to match her shutout performance in the first game, but only allowed one goal on six shots to bring the Mustangs to a 5-0 record in Conference-USA.

O’Rear’s two goals and one assist brings her season points total to 24, and the play of both Kimber and Krystal Bailey have them tied for second with 14 points.

O’Rear leads the Mustangs in points and is tied for third in the conference is tied for second in points per game with 1.6 and leads the conference in goals per game with .73.

Gunter is tied for second in the conference with seven shutouts and is fifth in goals against average and save percentage.

The Mustangs are the only undefeated team in C-USA and look to continue their perfect conference record at home this weekend playing Marshall and East Carolina University at home.
