So indie-rockers The Killers have become mainstream, and Coldplay has been played so much on Top 40 radio stations that they have become coldplayed-out. Luckily for music lovers there’s a band everyone doesn’t already know about. The Redwalls, a Chicago foursome, have recently released their first major label album, “De Nova.”
Think The Beatles, a dash of The Strokes and a splash of Elvis—and you’ve got The Redwalls. The group is composed of Logan Baren (vocals and guitar), his younger brother Justin Baren (vocals and bass), Andrew Langer (vocals and guitar) and Ben Greeno (drums), ranging in ages from 20 to 22. The band has already toured with Rooney and Chris Robinson (The Black Crows) and appears to be the hot new thing.
On their new CD, “De Nova,” the boys sing about everything from their frustration with the FCC (“Falling Down”) to their frustration with the American sex-ification of war (“Glory of War”) to the real thing that caused them to pick up guitars and start a band—the ladies (“Love Her”).
The Redwalls do not want to be known as a statement band, hoping to make a change and influence young minds. Rather, they just want to “play rock ‘n’ roll” and use their music as a journal rather than a soapbox, said Logan Baren.
The arrangement of their songs may make them sound somewhat pop, though their combination of musical genres deems them anything but.
The track “Rock & Roll” is a classic rock jam, reminiscent of the pure, early goodness of The Beatles.
The tracks “Back Together” and “Hung up on the Way I’m Feeling” enrapture listeners with the laid-back psychedelic sounds of the 60s without any threat of unoriginality or the smell of stale vintage clothing.
However, like all great rock bands, the best way to enjoy their music is to see them live. The Redwalls will be playing at The Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum on August 25th.
