The Mustangs’ volleyball team did what they needed to do this weekend on the road. SMU split two games, winning the game they should win and losing the game they were supposed to lose.
The Mustangs started the trip against UTEP in El Paso.
The Miners came in 0-3 in the conference, and left 0-4. SMU was firing on all cylinders getting a double double from three players. Stefanie Kons, Caitlin Rainbird and Kathryn Wilkerson each picked up a double double, and Kons was just one kill short of a triple double.
SMU won the first and third games before finishing off the match in the fourth game. But the Miners put up a fight, losing each game by an average of just three points and sent the final game into extra points, forcing the Mustangs to score 31 to get the win.
Candice Davis once again led the team in digs with 30 and Natalie Peters led the offense with 17 kills.
The game against Tulane was a different story. The Green Wave’s record remained perfect in Conference USA play, defeating the Mustangs 3-0. The Mustangs played the Green Wave hard, but couldn’t get enough points to catch Tulane.
SMU got another solid game from Davis who had 17 digs and by Caitlin Adair who had eight kills and one block.
The solid weekend from Davis earned her Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors. It is the second time this season that Davis has earned the award, and the fifth time in her career.
Davis set a career-high with 30 digs against UTEP and averaged 6.7 digs a game in the seven games last weekend.
Davis and the Mustangs will return home to Moody Coliseum this weekend with a 7 p.m. match against Rice on Friday and a 1 p.m. match against Houston on Saturday.
