The Student Bar Association (SBA) hosted its annual 5k charity run Judicata and carnival last Saturday, which raised donations for the Southwest Transplant Foundation. The race kicked off at 8 a.m. from the Dedman School of Law and made its way through University Park on the east side of campus.
“It was special that we selected the charity that we did, because a law student, one of our own, needed some help getting a transplant,” SBA Vice President Eric Camp said.
The carnival was also a big success, held in the law school quad from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It featured a dunking booth, face painting and prizes.
For community members who aren’t athletically inclined, the law school offered a way to contribute without having to run over three miles. They allowed donators to contribute the registration fee and then skip the race, a strategy that undoubtedly increased the fundraiser’s success.
“We were able to raise somewhere between $6,000 to $7,000,” Camp said. “It was really good to get a turnout of 200 people.”
The Southwest Transplant Foundation is a non-profit organization serving Dallas-Fort Worth transplant recipients. Committed to removing the financial barriers that often keep patients from receiving care, the organization provides funds for medicines and other practical necessities such as rent, phone bills and transportation.
“The race looked like a lot of fun,” said passerby Kyle Hobratschk. “It was good to have it correspond with family weekend, I think that helped out.”
