Jones takes 1st

SMU golfer Lacey Jones earned her first win of the season on Wednesday, winning the Youel Invitational in Kapolei, Hawaii. The senior helped SMU to a third place finish out of a field of 18 teams. The Mustangs finished with an overall score of 913, only eight strokes behind the victorious San Francisco team.

Jones shot rounds of 70, 74 and 75 to capture her first place victory. Teammates Kate Ackerson and Jennifer Ackerson took fifth and 15th, respectively. K. Ackerson shot 76-74-75 while J. Ackerson shot a 79-76-76.

Head Coach, Todd Selders was extremely happy with the performances of his seniors at the tournament.

“I took the seniors (exception Laura Cross, who will redshirt the remainder of the year) that came in here four years ago and have led this program to where it is today, both in the classroom and golf course,” the coach said. “They have been the hardest working group I have ever been around and I wanted to let them enjoy a trip to a pretty nice place. I was really happy that Lacey won, she has played some really good golf over the last two tournaments. Now we need to hit the books and get caught up in class before we head out for the NGCA Match Play next weekend.”

SMU women’s golf will officially begin its regular season play in February of 2007.
