RLSH to donate

It’s that time of year again. Time for students to finish up their finals and start packing for move out day.

As they begin to pack, many will wonder how it is that all of their belongings seemed to double over the past year. Many students will take the easy way out and get rid of their stuff rather than trying to pack it.

That’s where the Goodwill Project comes in.

Resident Life and Student Housing asked Goodwill to provide donation trailers for the SMU campus. Jennifer Post of RLSH is coordinating this event.

“As students are moving out they usually have LOTS of stuff that they don’t need or want any more,” Post said. “We hope that they will donate their items instead of throwing them away.”

There will be three Goodwill trailers on campus during May. Two of the trailers will be on Bishop Boulevard. on May 3-7. One trailer will be near the Memorial Health Center and the other in front of McElvaney.

There will also be a third trailer near the Binkley apartments from May 8-11 and again on 27-31.

Goodwill employees will be at each station between 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. The employees will be accepting all donations.

Barbara Kunzinger, a sophomore advertising major, lives in the Daniel House apartments.

“I think it is a great service,” Kunzinger said. “I haven’t started packing yet, so I don’t know if I will be donating anything. I like to know the service is there though just in case I have things I don’t need anymore.”

For help with donations of larger items, Post suggests scheduling a time with the Goodwill employees.

RLSH started this program last year, but they only provided the two locations on Bishop Boulevard.

“Last year we had 287 individuals donate for a total of 6,760 pounds of merchandise,” Post said.

RLSH staff is hoping for an even better turnout this year.

Students were able to fill up almost two full trailers last year, according to Goodwill employee Marie Trevino.

“That is huge for a first time effort,” Trevino said. They want the donation amounts to be even bigger than last year’s.

Kelsey Marsh, junior English major, lives in SMU apartments on Airline Rd. “I’m really excited about this service,” she said. “I have so much furniture that I won’t need next year. I plan to take some stuff over there. I just wish there was a trailer closer to my apartment.”
