The SMU Board of Trustees and its standing committees meet thisweek for the first time in the 2003-2004 academic year. This year, like every year, brings a unique set of opportunities andchallenges for our University.
When the Board and committees meet to discuss long term plansfor SMU, be assured that students will be represented in thedialogue. The administration and Trustees are very mindful of thestudent experience at SMU and seek to gain student input andperspective through many channels.
As a result of the University’s commitment to the studentperspective, the Board of Trustees has Student Representatives withfull voting privileges on each of the standing committees. Inaddition, a Student Trustee is appointed to be a full voting memberof the Board each year. Student Representatives have the samevoting privileges as other committee members and Trustees and arelikewise committed to the same level of integrity andconfidentiality.
The mission of the Student Representatives to the Board ofTrustees is to serve as a liaison from the SMU student body to theBoard of Trustees and its standing committees. The StudentRepresentatives seek to gain input from all parts of the SMUstudent community and represent student perspectives fairly andcompletely to both the Board of Trustees and theadministration.
We are excited to have the privilege to serve SMU as StudentRepresentatives during the 2003-2004 academic year and arededicated to thoughtfully and enthusiastically fulfilling ourresponsibilities.
Much of the work of the Student Representatives takes place inthe background but we look forward to seeing you around campus andat campus events throughout the year. We hope that you will feelfree to stop by the Student Trustee office in the StudentActivities Center on the third floor of the Hughes TriggCenter.
We would love to attend events your organizations are holding oncampus, hear concerns and observations, and talk to you about yourexperience at SMU. In February we will be hosting “Diningwith the Decision Makers”, an annual dinner at which you canshare your experiences with current Trustees. This dinner is justone example of how we seek to provide the Board of Trustees withthe most complete view of student life at SMU possible.
We encourage you to contact us with any concerns or comments. This will be an exciting year for SMU and we look forward toworking toward positive changes that will further the vision of SMUand enhance the University community for future classes ofstudents.
We feel privileged to have the opportunity to serve SMU in thisunique capacity and hope that you will help us make the most ofit.
