The SMU women’s tennis team kicked off its spring season with a win against University of Texas-San Antonio on Saturday at the Garland Tennis Center. The Mustangs did not play the women from the University of Texas-Arlington as scheduled due to weather. The match will be rescheduled for later this season.
Despite an hour rain delay between doubles and singles play, the Mustangs were able to assert their dominance over the women of UTSA, making them 1-0 so far this season.
SMU swept the Roadrunners 5-0, winning all three doubles matches and four singles matches. Jennifer Chay and Marta Georgiana at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, did not need to finish their matches because SMU had already won.
At No. 1, Natalia Bubien had no trouble defeating UTSA’s Karen Scida 6-0, 6-1. Scida’s teammate Tanya Hasking fell to freshman Claire Rietsch in the No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-1. Bubien and Rietsch teamed up to play No. 1 doubles, again defeating Scida and Hasking 8-4.
The No. 5 and No. 6 singles wins clinched the victory for the Mustangs. Freshman Pavi Francis took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sna Paula Soto Anton at No. 5 while Monica Neveklovska defeated Eva Silvester 6-3, 6-3. Neveklovska paired up with Kristen Reid in doubles, eliminating UTSA’s Holly Phillips and Monika Drabkova 8-0.
Chay did get to finish her doubles match when she paired up with Francis to beat Sandra Kukla and Soto Anton 8-1 in the No. 3 spot.
The Mustangs head to Kentucky for their first road trip of the season. SMU faces Troy on Feb. 3 and Louisville Feb. 4.
