In a story released last week on smumustangs.com, the list ofplayers that were being considered for this years Doak Walker Awardwere released. Among them, senior Running Back Keylon Kincade, whorushed a school record 327 times last season, and totaled more than1,297 yards, third most in school history. The Doak Walker award isnamed after the former SMU standout running back who won theHeisman Trophy as a junior in 1948. The Heisman Trophy is given outonce a year to the most outstanding athlete in collegefootball.
Last Thursday, former SMU basketball standout Quinton Rosssigned a contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. Ross, who was the2002-2003 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) player of the year,avereged just over 20 points a game last season. In stats posted onESPN.com, Ross avereged 14.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.9 assistsin his college career, which was 119 games. He finished asSMU’s 4th all-time leading scorer with 1,763 points.
In a related article, SMU senior Brian Bischoff has been namedto the Butkis Award watch list, according to the Downtown AthleticClub of Orlando. Bischoff, a four year starter with the Mustangs,was a freshman walk-on, but earned a scholarship and, after being aredshirted freshman, has started 28 times in his SMU career,including 20 times in a row.
Created in 1985, the Butkis Award is named after one of thegreatest middle linebackers in football history. Last year’swinner, E.J. Henderson, is now a linebacker with Minnesota.
