From rumors of girls wearing cocktail dresses to class, tospotting moms and daughters decked out in their best on move-inday, finding your style at SMU can be intimidating. But just likeyour major, your style will probably change. Hippie chicks coulddiscover the allure of high fashion and quirky dressers might fallin love with pearls. You will probably look back and laugh at the clothes you forcedyour parents to buy you over parent’s weekend. With falltrends all over the board – from menswear, mod, andmini’s – don’t be surprised if you cringe lookingback at yourself from your senior year. But who cares? This fallget decked out in animal prints and croc accessories anddon’t forget the continuing homage to the 80’s. Butplease not to class; I promise, jeans and a tank areappropriate.
You can look forward to Dallas’s great shopping, unlessyou are coming from NYC or LA, then I must offer my condolences.Dallas offers a little bit of something for everyone and all withinreasonable reach of SMU’s campus. After three years ofcollege shopping, many style metamorphosis and a summer internshipat Fashion!Dallas, I am sharing my fashion findings.
Whatever your style, here are tips on where to find it inDallas. And don’t be afraid to fall into more than onecategory. Remember, you did come here to find yourself.
The Classic Prepster
Not hard to spot on our campus. This girl can’t wait toinherit her mother’s pearls and cashmere sweater setcollection. She always, “always” matches and nevertakes fashion risks like –gasp – plunging necklines. Astickler for classics, Ralph Lauren is godlike and Lily Pulitzerclose behind. Does this sound like a perfect match? If so, tie yourargyle sweater around your shoulders and check out these preppyshops.

La Fashionista
You couldn’t miss this die-hard fashion diva if you tried.Decked out is all the latest designers and trends, minimalism isnot in her vocab. She loves her flashy Louis Vuitton totes andrefers to Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana by their first names. Some might call her a trend victim walking around campus in herstilettos and silk cargos, but really it’s only a fashionlove affair. If you have ever bought a corset for reasons otherthan a racy frat party, these shops are for you.

The Funky Individual
Not many girls like showing up at an event in the same dress asanother, but this girl goes to great lengths to be an original. Heralternative style usually goes against the grains of currentfashion. She doesn’t necessarily have piercings and pinkhair, but don’t put it past her. Don’t think this girldoesn’t shop though, its not so easy being different. Theonly difference is you will find her in a musty vintage store, notNorthpark Centre. If the only designer line you will wear is Marcby Marc Jacobs (obviously due to his dedication to grunge andeccentricity) then these hidden treasures are for you.

The Granola Girl
Fleece, cords, Birkenstocks and peasant skirts is all this girlwill pack for school. Her ensemble tends to be more fitting for ahiking trip than a classroom – Patagonia fleece, broken incords, Uggs and a Northface backpack with more gizmos thanimaginable.
With her hair in a messy bun and face a la natural, thisgirl’s got the “college look” down pat.
If you were sporting peasant shirts before it became a hugetrend and still are now that it is so tired, this is your list.Since you don’t like shopping much, the selection is slim.Good news for you, I guess.
