The two top teams in the WAC set off some offensive fireworksFriday night in Honolulu, Hawaii.
SMU managed to hold UH to a 4-3 victory even though all sevengoals were scored in the first half.
SMU, 10-2 overall and 3-0 in WAC play, posted a 4-1 lead 30minutes into the game. Shortly after SMU gained its footing, UHscored back-to-back goals in less than 10 minutes. The RainbowWahine, 7-4-1 overall and 2-1 in WAC play, had at least threechances to tie the match in the second half.
The game started with three goals in the first four minutes ofplay. Lauren Mussallem fired a left-footed shot outside the boxthat hit the crossbar and fell into the goal. Two minutes later,the Mustangs went up 2-0 when Amanda Jordan sent a pass from leftmidfield to Olivia O’Rear, who sent a point blank shot intothe back of the net.
UH responded 10 seconds later when Natasha Kai burst past theMustang defense and scored a goal from the left side of the box tocut the lead to 2-1.
SMU seemed to take control of the match with goals by ErinMacCallum and Kim Harvey to lead 4-1, but UH wouldn’t quit asKalena Eaton scored her second goal of the season less than 30seconds after SMU’s fourth goal.
After an SMU handball in the box, Arlene Devitt converted on apenalty kick to cut the deficit back to one goal with only sevenminutes remaining in the first half.
Although the second half was scoreless, UH had numerousopportunities, including a shot by Devitt that went off the postand a shot by deHay in the final minute of the match that brokejust right of the goal. The teams each got off 21 shots with 10 ongoal.
The Mustangs return home for a 5 p.m. league game against RiceFriday night.
