The SMU women’s basketball team hosted the 10th annual Hoops for the Cure Classic this weekend. The two-day event, which took place on Friday and Saturday, featured teams from Bradley, San Jose State, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The Mustangs faced the Braves from Bradley on Friday night after Wisconsin-Milwaukee defeated San Jose State 66-63.
SMU walked away with an 88-61 victory over Bradley in the first meeting ever between the two teams. The victory helped the Mustangs to improve to 4-0 for the season, while the Braves fell to a 2-3 record. Junior post Janielle Dodds led the Mustangs with 24 points, in addition to her eight rebounds. Junior Katy Cobb and freshman Delisha Wills each contributed 14 points to the Mustang victory over the Braves.
Defensively, Brittany Gilliam posted four rebounds and two blocks for SMU. The Mustangs were 47.6 percent from the field for the game, compared to Bradley who only made 31.9 percent of its shots.
With the win over Bradley on Friday, SMU continued on to the championship final on Saturday where the team fell to the Panthers of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 53-47. The loss was SMU’s first of the season. UWM improved to 3-4 for the season with the victory over the Mustangs, while SMU’s record became 4-1.
Dodds was SMU’s top scorer again, posting 12 points against the Panthers. Dodds was also named SMU’s representative on the All-Tournament team. Wills also had another strong game, notching 11 rebounds.
The final game of the tournament was not nearly as fast paced as the SMU-Bradley matchup. Both SMU and UWM had difficulty finding the net at some point in the first half. The Mustangs took an 11-point lead early, but stayed scoreless as the Panthers went on a 17-point run later in the half. Freshman Jillian Samuels sunk two three-pointers to put SMU up 24-22 at halftime.
Panther Traci Edwards was named the All-Tournament MVP after a strong performance against San Jose State. Edwards posted eight blocks and a total of seven points against the Mustangs. The top scorers for UWM were Meredith Onson and Emily Markert, who each put up 11 points for the Panther victory. Markert also contributed to the UWM defense with 11 rebounds in the game.
At halftime of the championship game, $5,000 was donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. SMU last won the Hoops for the Cure Classic in 2004.
The Mustangs continue their season with a hometown competition versus TCU on Thursday in Ft. Worth.
