The SMU women’s soccer team had victories over San JoseState and Fresno State by a combined score of 10-1 at Westcottfield last weekend.
Kim Harvey stole the show with five goals and two assists.
The wins bring SMU to 10-2 for the season and 2-0 in WACplay.
The five goals move Harvey into third place on theMustang’s all-time career list for goals scored.Harvey’s 53-goal total surpasses Danielle Garrett’s 52goals and Kara Lee’s 51 goals.
Harvey has 14 goals for the season.
SMU defeated the San Jose State Spartans on Friday by a score of4-0. The loss drops the Spartans to 1-8, 0-1 in WAC play.
Harvey had the first two goals of the game, and sophomoreJennifer Martin added the third goal in the 33rd minute.
Freshman Olivia O’Rear rounded out the scoring in the 70thminute when she outran the Spartan defense and toe-punched the ballpast San Jose’s keeper. Lauren Mussallem and Adria Campbellboth had assists for the evening.
SMU outshot the Spartans 19-8. Goaltenders Amanda Jordan andRachel Slocum each played one half in the shutout.
Even though the Mustangs came away with a solid victory, theyweren’t entirely happy with their play.
“We got away with a win [against the Spartans],”Harvey said. “We can’t be happy with the way weplayed.”
Ashley Van Meter, a senior forward, saw her first action of theseason after sitting out the first eight games due to asurgery.
“It’s really exciting to finally play again,”she said. “It was a good game to get my confidenceback.”
In Sunday’s contest, the Mustangs scored four second-halfgoals in a 6-1 rout of Fresno State.
The Bulldogs fall to 3-6-2 (0-2 in WAC play).
Harvey once again led the way. The senior from Garland scoredthree goals and had two assists, including one on the game-winninggoal. It was her first hat trick of the season and the third of hercareer.
Jill Heinemann had two goals and an assist, including thegame-winning goal when she headed a Harvey free kick just insidethe near post. The goals brought her total to six for thisseason.
Kara Roberts scored her first goal of the season in the 83rdminute, when her low shot snuck under Fresno’s goaltenderJeannette Paine. O’Rear and Kelsi Dawe both had one assist inthe game.
Senior forward Erin Sayegusa scored the only Bulldog goal in the80th minute.
The biggest story of the game was Harvey. Her three goals movedher up two spots to sole possession of third on SMU’s careergoals scored list. Her 53 goals rank behind Courtney Linex’s64 and Lisa Cole’s 101.
“I think it’s awesome, just awesome,”Heinemann said. “It’s well deserved. She has such aknack for the goal.”
Harvey continues to move ahead of her sister’s careertotal of 38.
Sarah Harvey, who played for the Mustangs until 2001, rankssixth among SMU scorers.
Kim Harvey also took over the WAC lead in goals scored for the2003 season, moving one goal ahead of Hawaii’s NatashaKai.
The Mustangs travel to Hawaii next weekend for a Saturday nightgame that kicks off at midnight central time.
Their next home game is against Rice at 5 p.m. on Oct. 10.
