The Mustang women have gotten their season off to a strong start.
Picking up an impressive win against Texas Tech and tough losses to ranked Duke and Arkansas, SMU headed into the Conference USA season with an 8-4 record.
The Mustangs picked up double-digit victories in their first two games, defeating Tulsa by 10 and Memphis by 32.
In Birmingham, SMU suffered a three-point loss to UAB, but turned around and was able to post another double digit victory. This time it was an 11-point win over UTEP.
Most recently the Mustangs lost to Tulane at Moody on Sunday afternoon. SMU couldn’t capitalize on Delisha Wills’ career-high 21 points and a halftime lead of two.
It was free throw shooting that haunted the Mustangs in the second half. After making both attempts in the first half SMU struggled, making only 13 of 24 attempts.
Over the season the Mustangs have been led by a senior and a freshman.
Senior Janielle Dodds leads the Mustangs in scoring, averaging 15.2 points a game, and freshman Wills averages 10.1 points.
But it’s another freshman who has shot the ball with the most accuracy. Alice Severin is shooting almost 52 percent from the field.
Katy Cobb leads the Mustangs in assists with 42 on the season.
SMU will go on a three game road trip to face Tulsa, Rice and Houston.
It will be the second time the Mustangs will face Tulsa, and the first against Rice and Houston.
The next time the women will return to Moody Coliseum will be Feb. 1st to face UCF.
