The No. 8 SMU women’s swim and dive team stayed busy over the break with dual meets against Georgia and Texas A&M and a victory at the Kerr McGee meet in Oklahoma City.
The Mustangs shared a victory with the men’s team at the Kerr McGee meet in mid-December, where each team won with 295 points. The 15th annual meet featured collegiate and club teams from across the country.
After her strong performances at the Kerr McGee meet, junior Katie Roberts was named as the C-USA Swimmer of the Week. She earned four first place finishes and set two personal bests at the meet, placing her ninth overall in the individual standings.
Another SMU swimmer received the same honor early in January after her performance at the dual meet against Georgia. Sophomore Petra Klosova won three of her four events at the meet, including taking a first place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.16. She also took first in the 100 backstroke with a career-best of 56.06.
In the same week, SMU diver Kristen Schild received the C-USA Diver of the Week honor after her top-ten finish at the Georgia Invite and her first place victory in the dual meet against Georgia. This is Schild’s second honor this season.
The Mustangs lost both dual meets, but managed to set new season high and personal best times at each pool. The Mustangs started out strong against the Bulldogs with a first place finish in the 400 medley relay. Petra Klosova, Tamara Sambrailo, Justine Clark and Leane Darling finished with a time of 3:46.81.
Klosova’s career-best swim in the 100 backstroke and her first place victory in the 100 freestyle helped her earn her C-USA Swimmer of the Week award.
Angela San Juan Cisneros placed fourth in the 50 freestyle before taking first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.25. Teammate Justine Clark was right on her heels as she posted a time of 56.26 for second place.
The Mustangs fell to the Bulldogs 170.5-123.5.
In their last home meet of the season, SMU faced No. 5 Texas A&M in a rivalry tradition that dates back to 1980. SMU had won the previous two meets, until this year when the Aggies defeated the Mustangs 178.5-115.5.
In the 1000 freestyle, Mustang Anja Carman out-touched Aggie Jenni Straton by .05 seconds. Katie Roberts and Federica Felloni placed third and sixth, respectively, for SMU.
Klosova took first in the 100 freestyle again, while teammate Darling placed fourth with a time of 51.05. In the 500 freestyle, Jennifer Blackman took first, clocking in at 4:52.90.
Schild had another first place finish on both boards, ending the meet with a career-high score of 302.92. Fellow diver Mara Morehouse placed third overall with 211.35 points.
The eighth ranked Mustangs continue their season in Austin this coming weekend, where they will face both Arizona and Texas.
