SMU entered Wednesday night’s match-up at the University of Central Florida hoping to turn its season around and end a two game losing streak. They left frustrated and disappointed.
Jermaine Taylor shot 4-of-10 from the 3-point arc and scored 22 points for the Knights (14-6, 4-2), who flew past SMU 70-45 in Orlando. Derek Williams led the Mustangs with 17 points. The Mustangs (6-12, 1-5) have lost three straight conference games and are still looking for their first road win.
The Knights held the Mustangs offense, which looked much improved in a high scoring game against East Carolina, to 29.8% shooting from the floor and their lowest point total in conference play. SMU went 9-of-15 from the free-throw line and a measly 2-of-18 from 3-point land.
UCF entered the game leading Conference USA in field goal percentage and 3-point shooting, and continued the trend early in the first half as it jumped out to a lead and never looked back. The Knights were ahead by 17 at halftime and extended their lead to as much as 27 in the second period. SMU went on a 9-2 run to pull within seven, but UCF answered with a 10-2 run of its own to extend the lead back to 15 late in the first half.
Bamba Fall had two blocked shots to bring his career total to 227, which moves him into sixth place in conference history. Fall is in second place in SMU history to Jon Koncak’s total of 278.
The Mustangs next game is at Tulsa on Saturday at 2 p.m.
