Peyton Manning is looking to once again shake the theory that he can’t win the big game, while Tom Brady is trying to restore his Patriots to championship form.
Last season in the AFC Divisional Playoffs the Colts thought they had made it over their proverbial hill – the Patriots – when they defeated them to play the Pittsburg Steelers in the AFC Championship game. The only problem was Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers, who went on to defeat the Colts and then the Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
But Manning and the Colts defeated the Patriots earlier this season in Foxboro. This time Indianapolis won’t have to fight the weather since they will play in the RCA Dome.
It was the Colt defense that got it done in the first meeting of the season, and they were able to intercept Brady three times.
There have been two big names in the playoffs the last five years: Tom Brady and Adam Vinatieri. While both were on the same team, the Patriots were nearly unstoppable.
But now it’s the Colts who have the upper hand; Vinatieri went five for five, including a 51-yard field goal that had a little help from the crossbar getting through.
The five field goals got the Colts past the potent defense of the Baltimore Ravens.
The New England Patriots took a more difficult, and offensive, path to the AFC Championship, defeating the favored San Diego Chargers 24-21.
In a game that went back and forth, Tom Brady did what he has done all of his career – come back.
The Patriots were down 21-13 with 8:35 left in the game. In two drives, he took his team 104 yards in four minutes and got the 11 points needed for victory. With the exception of an interception that was fumbled back to the Patriots, Brady was flawless.
This is a match-up between a team looking to reach its full potential and a team who has been to the top and is looking to return.
Either team that comes out will inevitably have the upper hand against the team from the NFC.
Quarterbacks are the key to victory, and this game has two of the best.
