The SMU Women’s Tennis team (2-0) opened the spring season over the weekend, winning a double-header on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Turpin Tennis Stadium. The Mustangs dominated UT-Dallas (0-1) by a margin of 7-0 and defeated UTSA (0-2) 5-2. All three doubles teams went undefeated on the day including a complete shutout against UT-Dallas.
The Mustangs’ match at the University of Arkansas, scheduled for today, was cancelled due to inclement weather.
In singles on Saturday, the Mustangs went undefeated against UT-Dallas winning all six matches in straight sets, while winning several matches in three sets against UTSA.
The Mustangs enter the season nationally ranked at No. 75 and with a clean bill of health. The 2007-2008 season was a challenging one for the Mustangs as the team suffered several injuries, including season-ending injuries to now-seniors Monica Neveklovska and Kseniia Tokarieva. Returning to good health proved to be an issue that the team continued to deal with through the fall portion of the 2008-2009 schedule.
“Four of our top players were sidelined from competition so that they could really focus on their rehab in order to be completely ready for the spring,” head coach Lauren Meisner commented in a December statement on SMUMustangs.com.
