Most students think the learning is over by finals week, butsome campus groups will be giving a little instruction of their ownduring reading days.
The Meadow’s Concert Choir will join the Perkins School ofTheology Seminary Singers Thursday at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. in PerkinsChapel for its annual Christmas performance of “A Service ofNine Lessons and Carols.”
The performance will feature nine scripture readings andlessons, each followed by a musical response.
“Music simply sets the season,” choir member SarahBoaz said.
This year’s performance is special because it honorsformer choir director Lloyd Pfautsch, who died last month.
“The whole thing honors him,” choir director Dr.Alfred Calabrese said.
SMU began performing the piece in 1959 under the direction ofPfautsch and Grady Hardin.
Pfautsch served as the director of choral activities at SMU from1958 until 1992.
One of the songs he arranged, “A Carol for Advent,”will be performed in his honor.
The Seminary Singers will also perform “The Work ofChristmas,” a new song written and dedicated to Pfautsch byhis former colleague Jane Marshall.
The groups will be under the direction of Calabrese and Dr.Michael Hawn.
Other songs on the program include sacred music like”Christus Paradox,” “In Dulci Jubilo” and”Taiz e Chant.”
The choir will also perform classic hymns such as “Lo! Howa Rose E’er Blooming” and “Hark! The HeraldAngels Sing.”
Audience members are also encouraged to join the choirs in asing-along of selected classic Christmas carols throughout theconcert.
“Not only does the performance give us a chance to showwhat we can do, it will give everyone an uplifting break fromfinals,” Boaz said.
No tickets are needed for attendance, but students areencouraged to get to the chapel early to ensure a seat.
