Moody Colliseum erupted Monday night as the men’sbasketball team upset 25th-ranked Texas Tech, 62-59. Sophomoreguard Bryan Hopkins led the Ponies with 19 points. Forward PatrickSimpson also scored 11 points and nine rebounds to record adouble-double. Eric Castro added 10 points and six rebounds. TheMustangs held the Red Raiders scoreless in the last 4:29 of thegame to improve their record to 2-1 for the season.
After leading by 16 in the first half, the Mustangs fell behind53-50 after Texas Tech’s Andre Emmett scored 28 points and 12rebounds. Emmett’s efforts weren’t enough, though, asthe Mustangs’ Justin Isham stole the ball with four secondsleft in the game and was fouled. Isham gave the Ponies a 3-pointlead after hitting the second of two free throws.
Tech missed a game-tying 3-pointer, as fans and players stormedthe court in celebration.
The Mustangs play Baylor at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Waco.
