The men’s swimming team hosted the University of Florida,Texas A&M and the University of South Carolina on Friday andSaturday in the 2004 Dallas Morning News Swimming and DivingClassic at Perkins Natatorium.
Despite the Florida Gators winning the first three events, dayone of the meet proved successful for a handful of Mustang swimmersand divers.
Junior swimmer Camilo Becerra, won two events on the first day:the 50 free with a time of 20.27 seconds and the 100 fly with atime of 48.18 seconds.
Sophomore diver Philip Griffin placed second in the one-meterdiving competition with a score of 296.75.
Junior Ferdi Postma also found success on day one, taking secondin the 200 free with a time of 1:39.88.
The Gators finished the night by setting a new meet and poolrecord in the 800 free team relay with a time of 6:34.26, smashingthe record time of 6:35.01 they set last year in the sameevent.
On Saturday, the Gators dove headfirst into the meet by winningtwo of the first three events.
The same Mustangs continued their standout performances onSaturday.
Becerra placed second in the 100 free with a time of 44.77seconds.
Postma finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:30.26and second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.20.
Coming off of his success in the one-meter diving competition,Griffin placed first in the three-meter diving competition with ascore of 315.20 and was named outstanding diver of the meet.
Despite the Mustangs’ efforts, the Gators, ranked fifth inthe country by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America,finished first in the final four events and won the meet with afinal score of 359.
The 15th-ranked Aggies came in second with a score of 329followed by the Mustangs with 314 points, and the Gamecocks ofSouth Carolina floundered into fourth with 266 points.
Swimmer of the Meet, Florida’s Ryan Lochte, took home fivetitles and set a pool and meet record in the 200-yard individualmedley with a time of 1:47.76, eclipsing his previous record by .05seconds.
He also won the 400-meter individual medley with a time of3:47.17 on Friday and his winning time of 4:21.69 in the 500freestyle was the eighth-fastest time in the country thisseason.
The SMU men swim team’s next meet takes place against TCUat 7 p.m. on Thursday in Fort Worth.
