The SMU men’s soccer team tied the BYU Cougars club team 3-3 in a Monday night exhibition game at Westcott Field.
“We were a little bit tired because we have been going through two-a-days,” head coach Schellas Hyndman said.
Approximately 400 people attended the game to watch the Mustangs battle the Cougars.
The Mustangs took the lead with an early goal from freshman forward Colin Clark at the 13:51 mark. BYU answered back when midfielder Spencer Viernes put one in the net at 18:09 in the first half. The first half ended with both teams tied 2-2.
Both teams remained tied until Clark scored his third goal of the game with 18 minutes left to play. Less than two minutes later, BYU’s Thomas Foster scored the tying point to tie the game 3-3.
Colin Clark scored an amazing three goals for SMU.
“I can’t ever remember a freshman scoring three goals in an exhibtion game,” Coach Hyndman said. “It was rememarkable. It makes me wonder what’s next (from Colin Clark)?”
Midfielders Spencer Viernes, Matt Walker and Thomas Foster scored BYU’s three goals.
The Ponies open the 2002 regular season on Friday, Aug. 30 when UT-Dallas visits SMU. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
