Way to go, team! Ed Board has been waiting for over a year tosay that.
This first win of the year, against a team to which we lost31-14 last season, is without a doubt the most uplifting event tohit the campus so far this semester.
The post-game behavior from fans was certainly fresh, quitedifferent from the dejected shuffling of the last few diehard fansfrom the stadium. These actions however were destructive anddangerous.
Thankfully, the SMU Police Department, University Park PoliceDepartment, Highland Park Police Department, Dallas CountySheriff’s department and DART police were there to make surethe action didn’t get out of hand. Instead they clotheslinedand tackled students. Fans were safe from Fort Worth PD, DallasSWAT and the Baylor University Medical Center police, but it wouldseem that every other department with any sort of jurisdictionalclaim to the university was represented at Saturday’sgame.
Ed Board would imagine that the university’sadministration realized the need for police as the Mustangs wentinto the game a two-point favorite. They then took exaggeratedsteps to prevent exactly what happened: a rush of the field anddestruction of a goalpost.
Admittedly, Ed Board sees the merit in rushing the field andtearing down the goalposts in celebration. It builds school spiritand is a healthy outlet for pent up feelings of joy and exuberance. The team certainly earned it after such an impressive win.
However, Ed Board cautions that this can’t happen afterevery win. First of all, a student remains in the hospital inguarded condition after the goal post, or a part thereof, hit himin the head. Secondly, goal posts are expensive and will bereplaced with tuition dollars. This is an extremely serious affair— one that jeopardized the lives of our fellow students andpermanently damaged university property.
For the first win in 16 games, Ed Board appreciates theenthusiasm SMU students brought onto the field. We would also liketo congratulate the football team on a well-played game and wishthem luck throughout the rest of the season. To the fans on theother hand, Ed Board would like to say that cheering for our teamis fine, but destroying things is completely unadvisable for theaftermath of future games.
