When a good deal comes along most people act on it. But, now, SMU students may have to be a bit more discerning when it comes to a great steal.
According to police reports, officers found two men in a Ford Explorer selling stereo speakers out of the trunk of their vehicle to SMU students on Aug. 30. The men said they worked for Southwest Entertainment and were trying to unload unordered speakers for a compelling price.
Southwest Entertainment is not listed with the Dallas Better Business Bureau.
Jordan Thompson, a junior business major, purchased speakers from Southwest when they set up shop in the parking lot of Kroger on Mockingbird Lane and Greenville Avenue. Company representatives quoted the value of the speakers at $1,500, but Thompson was able to talk them down to $200.
“The speakers were not quality ones at all,” Thompson said.
Almost immediately, he noticed problems with the volume and bass levels in both speakers.
Although he thought he was getting more than his money’s worth, Thompson admits that he got exactly what he paid for.
Representatives from Southwest Entertainment were unavailable for comment.
However, Thompson’s situation is not unique. SMU Police Department warns the campus to be aware of these solicitors so students don’t get led into a shady deal.
University policy prohibits solicitors from selling anything on campus, said Capt. Mike Snellgrove of the SMU PD.
“Buy your products and goods from an established business in the area,” said Snellgrove. “In one or two days, these folks will be gone so there’s no likelihood you can exchange a bad product or get your money back.”
