On Oct. 20, Jennifer Jones, assistant dean of student life and director of student activities and multicultural student affairs was elected the 33rd National President of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc (NPHC).
The Beta Phi Beta sister of 26 years, who had been the national vice-president of the organization for four years, said, “It was time to make the natural progression and run for president.”
The NPHC is composed of nine international Greek letter sororities and fraternities dedicated to “unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations.”
Every two years the NPHC holds a convention to elect new officers for both regional and national positions. Potential candidates submit forms that are reviewed by a council of graduate and undergraduate members who then choose the officers.
“I was a little nervous at first, but then I found out no one else ran and that was quite relieving,” Jones said.
One of her main duties will be to take part in a nation-wide assessment of more than 800 universities that offer Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities. Along with the International Inter-fraternal Council, the National Panhellenic Conference and the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the NPHC will review and evaluate the legitimacy of the fraternities and sororities.
“I’m really looking forward to working with the five new officers that were elected with me on this assessment,” she said. “They are very good people, and I really believe in what we’re doing.”
