Lecture addresses separation of church and state

SMU Political Science Symposium is presenting “The Separation of Church and State” 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Umphrey Lee Ballroom.

The presentation will feature lectures by Rob Boston of Americans United and Kelly Shackelford of the Liberty Legal Defense Fund. Topics of discussion will include prayer in school, creationism, abortion, evolution and the free exercise clause.

SMU alumnus to receive ‘Woman of the Year’ honors

Dr. Mona S. Hersh-Cochran has been selected to receive the distinguished 2002 Woman of the Year Award from the Business & Professional Women’s Club of Dallas. The award is given annually to recognize outstanding women who have distinguished themselves in their organization, community and career.

Hersh-Cochran, a professor emeritus, was the first woman to receive a doctorate degree from SMU. She retired from teaching at Texas Women’s University in 2000. She will receive her award at a dinner banquet Thursday at Cooper’s Guest Lodge.
