Comedy troupe Kids in the Hall burst onto American television screens with an HBO variety show in the ’90s.
The skits were freshly written, and the jokes were well timed. The five members of the group often dressed in drag as part of the show adding to the off the wall humor of the group. The series stopped prduction nearly seven years ago, but it lives on in syndication.
The guys headed in different directions. Some of the guys went on to star in popular sitcoms, such as Dave Foley and his stint on “News Radio.”
The guys from the Kids in the Hall have aged a little bit since they recorded the last episode of their successful series.
They’ve also put on a little middle-aged weight, but one thing hasn’t changed – these guys are funny.
The Kids’ new DVD chronicles their 2000 road tour across the country. It’s a mixture of live performances, behind-the-scenes footage and commentary.
The tour presents a return to their roots as they perform on small stages with a limited number of props. They rely on the audience’s appreciation of the more popular skits from their television production.
The behind-the-scenes bits take up the majority of the 105-minute run time. They’re humorous but are better appreciated by true fans of the Kids.
An interesting bit of drama unfolds as the cast and crew contemplate Dave Foley’s impending laser eye surgery and its potential impact on the tour.
The real life scene showed a divided Kids – Foley in one dressing room and the rest of the bunch in another.
After a manager pleads the guys’ case, Foley agrees to a rescheduling.
This DVD is perfect for anyone thirsty for new material from Kids in the Hall.
It’s a must-have for any die-hard fan of the Canadian quintet, but anyone looking for a laugh-a-minute joke-a-thon might want to flip to Comedy Central and catch an episode of the show in syndication.
The Kids will be doing an in-store appearance at the Mockingbird Station Virgin Megastore Friday.
The appearance is in support of the new DVD and their live performance at the Bronco Bowl, also tonight. The doors open at 6:30 p.m.
