Meadows CCPA
Wiley College and SMU will square off in a campus debate at 5:30 p.m. in O’Donnell Auditorium of the Owen Fine Arts Center. This is the second of two debates, as the school squared off on the Wiley Campus in January. The debate pays homage to one of the first debates between a white college and a black college, which is the same as the one mentioned by Denzel Washington in 2008’s “The Great Debators.”
The debate has been arranged in association with Black History Month. After the debate, “The Great Debaters” will be shown at Studio Movie Grill located at 4721 W. Park Blvd., at 7:30 p.m. For more information, contact Ben Voth at [email protected].
Meadows Cinema-TV and SMU Human Rights Education Program
In association with Black History Month, Meadows Cinema-Television and the SMU Human Rights Program present two documentaries from new CTV chair Rachel Lyon, an Emmy-winning filmmaker. Both “Race to Execution” and “Juror Number Six” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Feb 26 in the Hughes-Trigg Forum, following a reception at 7 p.m. “Race to Execution” takes a look at the death penalty in the United States, focusing on race bias within the capital punishment system. “Juror Number Six” is a short Internet film, which takes a look at how media affects public perceptions of race.
After the screenings, a panel discussion will immediately follow, which will include Lyon, Director of Human Rights Education Program Rick Halperin, SMU Associate Professor of Sociology Dick Hawkins, and SMU Associate Professor of Law Victoria Palacios.
