One of the great things about having a car is making it your own. That could mean hanging a pair of fuzzy dice from your mirror or putting a decal from your school or sorority on your back window. However, we’ve been noticing some automobiles whose owners have gone a little too far in accessorizing their vehicles.
A good example is those SUVs sporting a sticker for every kid on the back of the car. We’re sure you’re proud that Jimmy plays football, Timmy does theater, and Kimmy plays soccer and chess, but when you have more than one or two decals on your rear window, it looks ridiculous. And talk about blind spots! Having five stickers on your window might be worse than those huge hockey pucks or baseballs that look like they’ve cracked your window. How amusing!
Another sore spot with us is bumper stickers. Having one can be cute but any more than that makes you look like a borderline schizophrenic. We all have many facets of our personality, but there’s no need for a bumper sticker for each one. No one doubts you like Tweety Bird, voted for Nader, have a pit bull terrier and are a “Brat 4 Life,” but it’s a little too much information to process while sitting behind you at a red light.
The worst offenders are those who have televisions in their cars. We’re all for this idea, but we’ve been hearing stories about people getting pulled over for watching pornography on these TVs, and that’s just not OK. Do you think other people can’t see what you’re watching? We realize that it’s your property and you can watch what you please, but when other people can see what Jenna Jameson is doing in there, we have a problem. Aside from the obvious “there are children in the cars around you” factor, a lot of people don’t want to watch pornography and even more would prefer not to be distracted by it on the road, where safety should be everyone’s number one priority.
Again, it’s your car and you can do what you want. But let’s practice a little self-control! If you saw someone wearing a top hat, a baseball cap, clown makeup, a T-shirt with a picture of a puppy on it, pants, shorts, crazy socks and roller skates, you would think, “Wow, that person is overdoing it.” Why should our cars be any different? Bumper stickers, club decals, televisions and even accessories like spinners are cool, but maybe not all at the same time. Presumably, you drive the car you do because you liked the model or the color, so let your car speak for itself rather than letting your car speak for you.
