The Meadows Jazz Orchestra peformed classics Tuesday night in the Bob Hope Theater.
The ensemble played several songs by famous composer Sammy Nestico, including the opening number, “Switch in Time.”
The evening featured solos from most of the musicians, including an exceptional trumpet performance from senior Matt Houston.
The audience was especially pleased with the baritone-sax solo from Mike Morrison during the song “Pepper,” by composer, Lennie Niehaus.
Two years ago, orchestra director Akira Sato wrote the song “Marscapone” and was pleased with the performance the band delivered.
“I thought that everything came together really well tonight,” Sato said. “As a director, you really can’t ask for anything else.”
The jazz ensemble is made up of two graduate students and 15 undergrads. Not all of the students are music majors – some are engineering students or are studying in the business school.
The Meadows Jazz Ensemble will perform again on April 18.
