The No. 46 SMU men’s tennis team swept a pair of contests Wednesday at Turpin Tennis Stadium to improve its record to 5-3.After starting the season 0-3, the team will try to keep its winning streak in tact with a pair of games in Minneapolis this weekend. The Mustangs play the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix (0-4) Saturday at 3 p.m. before taking on the University of Minnesota Gophers (3-1) Sunday at 2 p.m.Against the Cameron Aggies, ranked No. 6 among Division II teams, the Mustangs took five of six individual matches before winning the doubles point for a 6-1 victory.”It was a day where we gained a lot of valuable experience,” said head coach Carl Neufeld.Junior Robin Fahgen kept his undefeated streak (5-0) alive in singles play against Cameron senior Daniel Pazos (6-2, 6-0).Sophomores Adham el-Effendi and Darren Walsh also remained unbeaten in singles competition. Walsh defeated the Aggies’ Diego Trojano (6-3, 6-4) before el-Effendi beat Thomas Peixoto (6-2, 6-4).The pair then teamed up to win its doubles match (8-6) against Cameron’s Pazos and Trojano.After the afternoon victory over the Aggies, Neufeld said he “was able to gauge the matches” for the nightcap against Southeastern Oklahoma State University.”We played some guys who haven’t gotten out there yet as freshmen,” he said, “and they’ve got to get their chances sometime.”The biggest impact was made by redshirt freshman Drew Peterson. After dropping his first set against Savage Storm senior Matt Kelso (6-3), Peterson was able to rebound with consecutive hard-fought victories (7-5, 6-4).”He clinched the win for us,” Neufeld said.Peterson then teamed with redshirt sophomore Bryan Griffin to defeat SOSU’s Naman Galvan and Mike Delloro in doubles competition (8-5). The Mustangs swept all three doubles matches to secure the 5-2 win.”We learned to play tough and come from behind,” Neufeld said.
