Women’s Swimming and Diving dominates Texas

Mustangs win six of seven events

The No. 8 SMU women’s swimming and diving team dominated No. 9 Texas Friday night at Perkins Natatorium, winning 162-138. The Mustangs won nine of 16 events overall to defeat the Longhorns.

“We were really excited about our win over Texas. They are a team with high regards across the country and have one of the top programs in the United States,” head swimming coach Steve Collins said.

SMU won the six of the first seven events of the night, beginning with a 200 medley relay victory by Roxane Akradi, Tamara Sambrailo, Jennifer Blackman and Laura Pomeroy. The foursome won the night’s first event with a time of 1:44.07.

SMUs other 200 medley relay team of Alex Miciul, Jennifer Basel, Kate Eason and Michelle Vlasakova took third (1:47.40) and helped SMU take an early 13-4 lead.

Sophomore Candance Blackman topped the sprint free events and won both the 100 free (50.89) and 200 free (1:48.31).

“The medley relay teams did a great job setting the tone for the dual meet. They knew it would be very difficult to win and really stepped up,” Collins said.

Senior Flavia Rigamonti (9:48.80) finished first in the 1000 free followed by sophomore Anja Carman (9:51.89) in second. The one-two finish pushed SMUs lead to 26-10.

Candace Blackman (1:48.31) touched the wall first in the next event, 200 free, followed by her sister Jennifer (1:50.75). Celina Lemmen (1:51.83) finished just behind the siblings in third.

Freshmen Jenny Basel won her first collegiate heat when she took first in the 100 breast (1:04.17), just ahead of teammate Sambrailo (1:04.73). Carmen won first in the 200 fly (2:01.89), and Laura Pomeroy (23.45) and Leane Darling (23.70) finished first and second in the 50 free.

The Mustangs also dominated the top three spots in the 100 free and finished second, fourth and fifth in the 200 back. Rigamonti won her second event of the meet when she finished first in the 500 free (4:49.66).

SMU diver Kristen Schild took fourth in both the one— (257.92) and three-meter (270.60) diving competitions of the night.

SMU won its last event of the night when the 400 free relay team of Darling, Pomeroy, Akradi and Jennifer Blackman finished in 3:24.45, nearly three seconds ahead of the Longhorns.

“It was really a team effort. It’s something we talk about a lot and the dual meet really showed it,” Collins said.

The women’s swimming and diving team returns to action Nov. 18-20, when it travels to College Station, Texas, for the Texas A&M Invitational.
