Volleyball downs UAB, Memphis

The SMU volleyball team won its fifth straight home match Friday night 3-2 (30-23, 25-30, 30-27, 25-30, 15-10) against UAB.Outside hitters Caitlin Rainbird and Rachel Giubilato both had double-doubles, recording 19 kills a piece.

Freshman setter Stefanie Kons had the third double-double for the team with 10 digs and a career high 56 assists. Freshman middle blocker Natalie Peters gave 17 kills to the team and also contributed eight blocks and six digs.

Freshman Jenny Reyes saw court action with 14 digs, and also added five service aces to the Mustang victory. Junior libero Jennette Evanco led the team in digs, tallying 28.

Middle blocker Stephanie Bennet had a solid performance with three kills and five blocks, while senior Ashley Zenner contributed four kills and one block.

The Mustangs (10-11, 6-3 C-USA) continued their success Sunday afternoon where they defeated Memphis 3-0 (30-24, 30-19, 30-19).

Giubilato recorded the only double-double for the team with 11 digs and 12 kills. Peters also had another strong match with 10 kills, four blocks and one ace. Peters’ 28 solo blocks for the season tie the SMU record for most all-time blocks in a single season.

Bennet hit .429, recording six kills and seven blocks, while Rainbird gave seven kills, 12 digs, three blocks and one ace to the win. Zener notched five kills and three blocks.

Evanco led the team in digs yet again with 19, while also tallying two aces.

The Mustang volleyball team hits the court again this weekend at ECU Friday and Marshall on Sunday.
