The SMU men’s soccer team vaulted back into the national ranking’s last week and continued to show why they deserve the notoriety as they defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 3-2 Friday evening in Oklahoma.
Because of the win, senior forward Duke Hashimoto earned both conference and national offensive player of the week honors.
The NSCAA/Adidas national rankings, released last Tuesday, have the Mustangs ranked 11th in the nation. The team had a preseason ranking of seventh, but fell from the top-25 after a tough opening stretch.
SMU now boasts a record of 9-4-2 (7-0 C-USA) and hasn’t lost a game since a 2-0 loss to New Mexico on Sept. 23, spanning eight straight games. Tulsa’s record fell to 4-5-6 (1-3-3 C-USA).
Against the Golden Hurricane, the Mustangs fell behind early in the second half, when they gave up a penalty kick goal in the 48th minute to Kyle Brown. But in the 65th minute, Hashimoto scored off the rebound of a Kellan Zindel shot to tie the game.
Tulsa retook the lead in the 71st minute when Brown hit a hard shot to the left side of the net. And the Golden Hurricane managed to hold on to the lead until the 85th minute, when Chase Wileman sent a free kick into the box that Hashimoto played to a wide open Needham, who scored his sixth goal of the season.
Three minutes later, Hashimoto again earned an assist when he sprang midfielder Scott Corbin who sent a shot across the net that beat the Tulsa goalkeeper.
Goalkeeper Matt Wideman again got the start in place of Steve Sandbo, who appeared to injure his ankle in a game last weekend. Wideman had two saves on four shots on goal.
Hashimoto’s goal and two assists in the game earned him his second C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honors. He was also tabbed as the National Player of the Week by College Soccer News.
The Mustangs close out the regular season on the road next weekend when they travel to the East Coast to face East Carolina and South Carolina.
