The pinnacle of America’s pastime is finally headed to the Lone Star State, and Ed Board encourages students to sit back and enjoy a slice of Texas history.
For some, the Houston Astros’ 5-1 pennant-clinching victory over the St. Louis Cardinals last night represented an end to the franchise’s infamous postseason futility. For others, last night was simply Wednesday night.
But, a World Series appearance is arguably the Mecca of the six-plus months of everyday play in baseball, and our state can now boast its first participant.
Sure, Texas has made headlines in the past. The state is home to our president, has witnessed landmark events such as the Alamo and can boast a nationally known set of public and private universities.
In fact, even major sports championships have seen their way to Texas within the last decade.
The Houston Rockets won the National Basketball Association title in 1994 and 1995. The Cowboys had a string of championships across the mid-1990s. Even the relatively young Dallas Stars brought home the Stanley Cup in 1999.
But the most American sport of all, baseball, has yet to name either of Texas’ two Major League Baseball teams – the Astros and the Rangers – as world champion.
This year could be the year, and Ed Board feels students should be mindful of the potential history occurring down I-45.
As a student at this university, all at SMU can currently call themselves a Texan. Ed Board thinks this should provide a bond strong enough to follow the Series over the next couple of weeks.
At a time when the student body is mentally recovering from the sight of those midterm grades, not to mention getting nauseous with the end of the semester slowly approaching, a little downtime could be beneficial.
Our Houston brethren have taken the National League pennant as a chance to party with true Lone Star spirit, and we should do the same.
Things are said to be bigger in Texas, and this is expected to hold true for Houstonians’ celebration this weekend.
So, grab your beverage of choice, set the tube on the ol’ ballgame and join Ed Board in a toast to the Houston Astros and true Texas spirit.
